Mahendra Singh Mewar of the then royal family of Mewar dies at the age of 83

Former BJP MP and Mewar royal family member Mahendra Singh Mewar died at a private hospital in Udaipur on Sunday. He was 83 years old.

He has been receiving treatment at the hospital for several days, family sources said.

“He breathed his last on Sunday,” the source added.

Mahendra Singh Mewar was a descendant of Maharana Pratap, a 16th century Rajput king who ruled Mewar until his death in 1597.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Chittorgarh seat in 1989 on a BJP ticket.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, BJP state president Madan Rathore, Chittorgarh MP and former BJP state president CP Joshi and other leaders offered condolences.

“Deeply saddened by the death of former Member of Parliament from Chittorgarh and member of the royal family of Mewar Mahendra Singh Mewar ji, who played an important role in social and political life,” Modi told X.

“He continued to contribute to the preservation and development of Rajasthan’s heritage throughout his life. He worked with complete dedication to serve the people. His social work will always be a source of inspiration,” he said condoling the death.

“I am saddened to hear the news of the death of former Member of Parliament Maharana Shri Mahendra Singh Ji Mewar. I pray to the Lord to grant the departed soul a place at his feet and give the family strength to bear this great sorrow,” Sharma told X.

“His death is sad, painful and an irreparable loss to the region and the state. His contribution and work in the community will always be remembered. Everyone will continue to find inspiration in his life,” said Joshi.

Mahendra Singh Mewar’s son Vishvaraj Singh Mewar is a BJP candidate for Nathdwara constituency in Rajsamand district. His daughter-in-law Mahima Kumari is a BJP MP from Rajsamand.
