Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu conducted a high-level review of the ongoing expansion works at Vijayawada Airport in Gannavaram, and set a target of June 2025 completion of the New Integrated Terminal Building.

Mr. Naidu, during a meeting at his camp office at Undavalli in Guntur district on Saturday, emphasized the inclusion of a cultural theme inspired by the Kuchipudi traditional dance form in the construction of the terminal, to showcase the heritage and vibrancy of Andhra Pradesh.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, AP Investment and Infrastructure Minister BC Janardhan Reddy, and senior officials of the Civil Aviation Department, received a detailed presentation on the progress of the airport expansion. The terminal, estimated to cost Rs 611 crore, has reached 58.5% completion rate. Besides, the construction of the ₹85 crore ATC (Air Traffic Control) tower has reached 52% completion.

The CM expressed concern over the current design, saying it lacked cultural appeal and resonance. He urged the authorities to include traditional materials in their construction, to reflect the culture of the Kingdom. The interior designs should prominently display the essence of local arts and crafts, making them visually representative of the heritage of Andhra Pradesh. The traditional art of the Kingdom should be displayed within the interior framework, making it not just a place of work but a cultural landmark, he said.

He discussed plans to improve air connectivity across Andhra Pradesh by building airports at five new locations: Moolapeta, Kuppam, Dagadarthi, Tadepalligudem, and an additional strip between Anantapur and Tadipatri. This expansion plan, according to Mr. Naidu, it was intended to increase economic activity by improving air connectivity. He emphasized the importance of strong support from the Department of Civil Aviation in furthering these goals and promoting regional economic growth.

“We are planning to increase air connectivity as part of a broader strategy to boost economic activity across Andhra Pradesh. I am asking to work with the Ministry of Aviation to help achieve the vision of our State,” said Mr. Naidu.
