CPI(M) leader and former Kannur District Panchayat President PP Divya was released from jail on Friday on bail. Earlier, the court granted him bail in a case related to the suicide of former District Magistrate (ADM) Naveen Babu.
Divya, who has been in jail since October 29, expressed grief over Babu’s death and said that, like his family, she also wants a thorough investigation. He said he trusts the law and is looking forward to proving his innocence in court. Divya emphasized that she always communicates with officials with good intentions.
Earlier, Judge KT Nissar Ahammed granted him bail with conditions that he will not leave Kannur, not try to influence witnesses, and must report to the investigating officer on Monday. Two people were also required to stand for his bail.
His lawyer noted that although the bail will release them, some information needs to be presented in court to reveal the truth.
Party leaders in Kannur welcomed the bail decision, acknowledging Divya’s mistakes but asserting that she should not be sidelined. They emphasized that he, like everyone else, has rights.
Ahead of the bail decision, CPI (M) State Secretary MV Govindan expressed support for Divya, saying the party’s aim is to guide its members, not condemn them. He said there is no question of the party leaders visiting him, he is still a member of the party.
After he was named as a suspect in Naveen Babu’s death case and arrested, the CPI(M) stripped him of all positions. CPI(M) Kannur District Secretary MV Jayarajan said that Divya’s actions have damaged the image of the party. However, the group has made it clear that Divya is not seen as an enemy but a member who needs to be corrected.
Divya had attended Babu’s farewell function on October 14, where she criticized him for delaying approval of the fuel pump and revealed that she knew why he approved it after he was transferred. Babu was found dead at his residence the next day.
Babu’s wife expressed disappointment with the court’s decision and said the family will discuss the next steps with their lawyer and continue with their case.
