“My father lived at night all his life as an adult. He started ‘jazz hours’ in high school and never looked back. When I was young, I would wake up in the middle of the night to look for him,” Rashida, 48, wrote on Instagram on Thursday, November 7. “Without a doubt, he’ll be in the house, composing (old school, pen and sheet music). He wouldn’t put me back in bed. He would smile and hug me as he continued to work…there was no safer place in the world than me.”
He continued, “He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. An artist. All accurate descriptions of my father but his music (and ALL his work) was a channel of his love. HE WAS IN LOVE. He made everyone he met feel loved and noticed. That is his legacy. I was lucky to find this love nearby.”
Rashida closed her note with a message to her late father. “I will miss his hugs and kisses and his unconditional love and advice,” she wrote. “Father, it is an honor to be your daughter. Your love lasts forever.”

He added, “I love it so much and I sing for fun and I write for fun, and I’ve sung backup on other albums. I sang backup for Maroon 5’s first two. I sang live for them.”
Instead, he moved into acting and directing, and even directed a 2018 documentary Quincywhich narrated the life and work of his father, with Alan Hicks.

“I’m protecting my father, and obviously it’s a very intimate story to tell,” Rashida said. Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “My brother shot some of those things in the hospital, and I shot some. We really did it for him because we wanted him to see where he was so he wouldn’t forget and take care of himself. That was the original intention. I think I can tell that story, because I know that you are a responsible and heavy person.
