The Iron Age menhir, a monument at a place known as ‘Niluvu Rayi’ located in Kamasanpalli village of Nagarkurnool district, is facing neglect.
The menhir, believed to have been built around 1500 BCE to commemorate the death of an important person and highlight ancient funeral customs, was spotted in an agricultural field near the Dindi River.
Archaeologist E. Sivanagireddy, who is also the CEO of Pleach India Foundation, visited the site on Thursday, and expressed concern over the condition of the menhir. Measuring 8 feet tall, 2.5 feet wide, and 1.5 feet wide, the granite structure leans toward the east and is in danger of being destroyed by ongoing agricultural activity.
Local farmers pointed out that many of the Iron Age burial sites, marked by round stones, had been removed during land reclamation in the area.
