“The charges against him are terrible,” said Callan, who is not involved in the case Us Weekly in a special interview on Thursday, September 19. “If convicted, he can expect to spend most of the rest of his life in prison. Federal prosecutors typically obtain pleas or convictions after trial in more than 90% of the cases they bring.”
Diddy, 54, was arrested Monday, September 16 in New York City after a grand jury indicted him following multiple sexual assault charges and a federal investigation. The rapper, who pleaded not guilty, was denied bail and kept at the Metropolitan Detention Center until his trial. A date for Diddy’s trial has not yet been set Deadline.
Callan explained that Diddy’s situation in prison is “unusual” as “many defendants are released on bond to await trial.”
“Prosecutors presented a strong case to both federal judges that Combs would likely flee and/or intimidate witnesses in the case if they were released,” he said. Us. “In such cases, federal courts will uphold pretrial detention. The decision of the lower court can be appealed but I believe that the reversal of the decision of the lower court is less likely to be appealed.”
However, the lawyer, who has been a lawyer in New York City for the past three decades, believes that Diddy’s case “may move quickly through the court system” due to the seriousness of the charges.
Callen also shared that while a life sentence is “possible” for Diddy, it is “unlikely” since there were no deaths.
That said, “Given the seriousness of the charges, a long prison sentence is a foreseeable reality if convicted,” Callan said. “A sentence of 10 to 20 years if convicted is possible.”
Currently, there are no talks for Diddy to negotiate a plea deal. However, there is an opportunity for that to change, according to Callan.
“Many defendants facing serious crimes negotiate a plea deal rather than risk a harsh sentence after trial. He may do the same,” said the lawyer Us. “Yes, a lot will depend on the willingness of the prosecutors to negotiate. So far they seem to have a solid offense and don’t seem to be in a position to stretch. Yes, he is considered innocent but he will have a hard time explaining his brutal beating of his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Venturain the hallway of a California hotel captured on videotape for all to see.”
Callan was referring to a resurfaced 2016 video of Diddy allegedly assaulting Ventura, now 37, at a hotel. Security footage was released by CNN in May, and Diddy can reportedly be seen grabbing, pushing, dragging and kicking the singer as she tries to leave the hotel room. After the clip hit the headlines, Diddy released an apology video.
“It’s hard to think about the darkest times in your life, sometimes you have to,” Diddy said in a May Instagram video. “I was f-ed up. I mean I hit the ground running but I don’t make excuses. My behavior in that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I am disgusted.”
