Retail inflation, factory output data to be released at 4pm instead of 5:30pm

The Department of Statistics and Programming on Tuesday announced an improvement in the release time of the macroeconomic Consumer Price Index and Index of Industrial Production data by about an hour and a half.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data are currently released by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MOSPI) on the 12th of each month at 5:30 pm (the next working day if the 12th falls on a holiday in case of CPI) and the previous working day (if the 12th falls on a holiday in case of IIP), said the official statement.

According to the statement, in order to give more time on the day of release to access CPI and IIP data, MOSPI has decided to revise the release time of CPI and IIP from 5.30 pm to 4.00 pm every 12 months (the following day working day if the 12th falls on a CPI holiday) and the previous working day if the 12th is not a holiday, in case of IIP).

The ministry explained that the new release time coincides with the closing hours of major financial markets in India, ensuring that the distribution of Consumer Price Index (CPI) data does not disrupt active trading.

This amendment is also in line with MoSPI’s commitment to transparency and accessibility in data dissemination, it said.

The next release of CPI and IIP data for October 2024 will be available on November 12 at 4:00 pm on the department’s website, the statement said.
