With a six-game winning streak and the best point differential in the NFL, the Lions are proving to be a serious threat to the Chiefs trailing back. That was even more pronounced in Week 9 as Detroit crushed the Packers and the Texans fell, allowing the Commanders, Vikings and Ravens to rise.
The consistent Steelers and blue-collar Bills sit in the middle of the pack, while the Falcons and Chargers enter the conversation. All four of those teams appear to be a minority of their opponents on the road.
Here are my Top 10 for Week 9 of the 2024 season.
1. Kansas City Chiefs
Last week: 1
It wasn’t good but the Chiefs are always perfect this season as they will face the Buccaneers on Monday night. The defense led by Chris Jones continues to spark the team with his disruptive skills leading a stifling defense. With the defense facing a single offense playing in the hands of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as a joy-driven player, the Chiefs managed to win without MVP-level Patrick Mahomes.
2. Detroit Lions
Last week: 2
Dan Campbell has built a tough and rugged team that can win at home or on the road against any opponent in any conditions. The Lions bombard opponents with a high-powered attack, and Jared Goff produces explosive plays in consistent play concepts that punish quarterbacks for overreacting. With defenses ramping up the pressure in Aidan Hutchinson’s absence, the Lions are rallying in form as title contenders with the ability to break out of the skin and defend.
3. Washington Commanders
Last week: 5
Jayden Daniels sparked the Commander’s rise to the top of the NFC with his hero-like performance as a two-way player. In Week 9, he had 244 total yards and two scores in a career-like effort that pushed Washington to its best start since 1996. If Dan Quinn can continue to build the defense into an elite unit on the perimeter, the Commanders could surprise like the dark. horse in the NFC race.
4. Minnesota Vikings
Last week: 6
Getting back on track following a two-game skid, the Vikings have shown great offensive efficiency and stifling defense, making them a challenge to tackle on the floor. If Sam Darnold can eliminate red-zone turnovers and remain patient as a game manager in the pocket, the Vikings can play the type of consistent football that produces wins in the playoffs.
5. In Baltimore Crows
Last week: 7
The combination of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry makes the Ravens a threat as a rushing attack, but the passing QB could help them pull away from the defending champions. Baltimore’s high-powered, multi-faceted offense could help the team overcome its defensive woes. Considering the Ravens have shown the ability to put up 30-plus points against any opponent, John Harbaugh’s team remains a contender despite a flawed defense.
6. The Pittsburgh Steelers
Last week: 8
As one of the league’s biggest surprises, the Steelers sit atop the AFC North behind a stout defense and emerging offense. Russell Wilson’s inclusion in the starting lineup as QB1 has ignited the passing game to complement the rushing attack. With George Pickens emerging as an unstoppable big-play threat and Wilson lobbing bombs over the top of the defense, the Steelers have shown quick resilience that will serve them well in key games against division rivals.
7. Buffalo bills
Last week: 9
Don’t look now, but the Bills are becoming a juggernaut no one wants to face in the postseason. Josh Allen & Co. proved that the offense can succeed without a true No. 1 receiver on the perimeter while embracing a blue-collar approach that is all about run and defense. With climate and playoff pressures forcing coaches to use back-to-back run-based game plans, this version of the Bills may be better suited to make a deep postseason run.
8. Atlanta Bow down
Last week: Not in the Top 10
Maybe Raheem Morris was onto something when he chose Kirk Cousins to be the Falcons’ QB1 as a blockbuster free-agent signing. The 36-year-old veteran was exactly what the team needed as a passer with natural intelligence and great awareness. In addition, he has been the perfect leader to teach a young team how to develop the habits needed to win in a playoff-like situation.
Kirk Cousins in the Falcons’ 27-21 win over the Cowboys
9. Philadelphia Eagles
Last week: 10
Although the Eagles have a talented roster that rivals any player, coaching mistakes and game management mistakes may hinder their chances of winning the title. Nick Sirianni’s unnecessary gambles allow bad teams to continue in games where the Eagles might register early hits. If the head coach focuses on helping his team do the small things necessary to win, the Eagles have enough talent to make it through the NFC field.
10. Los Angeles Chargers
Last week: Not in the Top 10
Jim Harbaugh’s team has flown under the radar for most of the season, but the Bolts’ two-game winning streak has put them in a position to earn a respectable seed that makes the playoffs. With the offense covering “three yards and a cloud of dust” with JK Dobbins leading the way and Justin Herbert filling a supporting role, the defense continues to wear down opponents with a set of defenders who are eager to dominate from start to finish. Given the Chargers’ strength, physicality and toughness, no one wants to face the “Powder Blues” in a playoff battle.
