AP Top 25: Oregon, Georgia, Ohio State top before first CFP rankings

In Oregon was the unanimous No. 1 pick in The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday, bolstering its bid for the No. 1 spot in the College Playoff selection committee’s preseason rankings.

The Ducks are No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the third straight week, and unanimously for the first time, following their 21-point win over Michigan.

Georgia, which received one No. 1 vote last week, remained No. 2 after Carson Beck’s three-game winning streak and a late rally to beat Florida.

Ohio State earned a one-spot promotion to No. 3 with its win in the Penn Statethe Buckeyes’ eighth straight in the series. No. 4 Miami (Fla.)which defeated Duke, and 5 Texaswhich was doing nothing, each of them increased the area. Penn State, which had been in the top five in the previous four polls, dropped to No. 6.

The expansion of the CFP to 12 teams this season means that top teams losing to other top teams is not something that excludes others from the national championship race. The first CFP rankings of the season will be released on Tuesday and updated weekly until the bracket is announced on December 8.

Tennessee held its spot at No. 7 despite a fourth-quarter fumble against three-time Kentucky, winning 28-18.

In Indiana jumped five spots to No. 8, its highest ranking since No. 7 in 2020 — and best in a non-pandemic season since the Hoosiers were No. 4 in their 1967 Rose Bowl season. The Hoosiers rolled past Michigan State, 47-10, on their way to 9-0 for the first time in program history; all wins this season have been by double digits.

SMU‘s 48-25 victory over Pitt earned the Mustangs a promotion from No. 20 to No. 13 – major upward movement this week. They haven’t been ranked this high since becoming No. 3 on Oct. 1, 1985, two years before the NCAA issued the “death penalty” that shut down the program in 1987 due to egregious infractions. The school again chose not to field a team in 1988.

Clemson again Iowa Statetied for number 11 last week, took a steep fall after losing at home. The Tigers dropped to No. 19 with their 33-21 loss against Louisville. The Cyclones dropped six points to No. 17 with their 23-22 loss to Texas Tech. Texas A&M, Kansas State and Pitt each fell five spots.

The armyAt No. 18, it is the highest ranked No. 10 in a season in 1960.

Boise Stateat No. 12, it has its best ranking since it was No. 8 in the last election in 2011.

Indiana is the best Notre Dame for the first time since the last poll in 1979, when the Hoosiers were No. 19 and the Irish were eliminated. The schools are separated by 200 miles in Indiana.

Vanderbilt’s 17-7 victory at Auburn allowed the Commodores to move back into the polls, with the No. 24, after an absence of one week.

Louisville, which was ranked weekly in September, dropped back to No. 25 following its upset of Clemson.

Illinois24 last week, saw its seven-week run in the Top 25 end with a 25-17 loss to Minnesota at home.

Missouriwhich was polled every week and reached number 6, it was released after the opening day. The Tigers held on to the No. 25 last week despite losing 34-0 Alabama.
