The 18-month long civil war in Africa’s third largest country has left tens of thousands dead and millions more displaced by the scourge of famine and disease. The crisis in Sudan is currently one of the worst in the world, but as the world’s attention remains focused on the conflict in the Middle East, it seems that the African nation is being forgotten.
Adding to the grim picture is a new 80-page report from the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, which sheds light on how the military attacks women. A fact-finding mission blames the Sudanese military (SAF) and its former military ally, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), for rampant sexual violence.

A UN report documents rampant sexual violence and human rights abuses in Sudan, affecting citizens aged 8 to 75. He describes how Sudanese women and girls are kidnapped for sex slavery, accusing the RSF of being behind “many” of the cases. . In addition, the mission reported credible stories of men and boys being raped and gang-raped.

This situation is exacerbated by the lack of health services. The conflict has left many hospitals and clinics destroyed, depriving victims of much-needed medical care.
“The level of sexual violence we have documented in Sudan is shocking,” said the organization’s Chairman Mohamed Chande Othman in a statement. The news situation in Sudan is “very alarming and needs an urgent solution,” he added.
Human rights organizations have also raised the alarm about the abuse of women. Advocates report that sexual harassment encourages women to take their own lives – either because of the violence they have endured, or to escape altogether.

Sudan’s brutal war broke out in April 2023 after a bitter power struggle between the SAF and the powerful RSF erupted into a pitched battle. Recently, the intense conflict in east-central Sudan has resulted in the killing of more than 100 people. The UN said the RSF shot civilians, sexually assaulted women and girls, and looted property.

“The people of Sudan are living through a nightmare of violence,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres told the Security Council earlier this week. “The suffering is increasing day by day, as there are almost 25 million people in need of humanitarian assistance,” he emphasized.

As Sudan nears collapse, foreign aid remains elusive. Only about half of the UN’s $2.7 billion humanitarian appeal for the Northeast African country has been funded. But even though the country is facing the worst famine in the world in forty years, it is still forgotten, overshadowed by the conflict in the Middle East.
