Writer nominated for Rajyotsava Award

Balasaheb Lokapur, a veteran writer and researcher, has been nominated for the Karnataka Rajyotsava award.

He worked closely with Amatur Balappa, the chief of Queen Kittur Channamma, who shot and killed St John Thackeray, a British civil servant in Dharwad, in the battle of Kittur in 1824. His major work leading to the biography of Amatur Balappa helped in the spotlight. about the life of a famous freedom fighter, who was largely forgotten until then.

Prof. Lokapur, 70, hails from Shiratti near Athani in Belagavi district. He taught geology in college, after his master’s degrees in the University of Karnataka, Dharwad. He received a doctorate in Kannada literature from Hampi Kannada university, for his work on ‘Jain sensibility in modern Kannada literature’.

Conservationist SM Chalavadi and Yakshanga Bayalata artist Yamunabai Kalachandra from Belagavi have been selected for Suvarna Mahotsava awards.
