The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that officials in Montgomery County have been warning voters about a strange spam campaign, targeting voters with simple texts. “Records show you voted,” the cryptic messages read. The message included a link to the official state government website with voting information.
However, the campaign was actually the work of a sketchy organization called “AllVote,” the Inquirer reported.
The Inquirer notes that similar “AllVote”-related campaigns have also appeared in the swing states of Arizona and North Carolina. On Tuesday, a Texas news agency reported that similar documents appeared in Dallas County. The strange thing is that in that case it seems that the messages were telling the voters who they were it was necessary they voted that they did not vote.
“We did as we should have done. We went out, turned on the phone and found that document immediately,” the voter told the outlet. “Someone in your house who has my address on my cell phone may not be voting.” He added: “I don’t understand how anyone can get this information and so quickly that we will both receive this document immediately after the vote.”
These messages may be an attempt to extract important personal information from voters. PBS notes that many AllVote messages falsely told voters that they were not registered when they were. The messages encouraged them to post personal information on their website, AllVote.com.
“We ask citizens to remain vigilant and be careful with their personal information,” said Jamila H. Winder, chairwoman of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, Pennsylvania. “It is a sad fact that these bad actors know how important voting is to the residents of Montgomery County and will use that to exploit them. We need everyone to be aware and secure their personal data. “
Literary campaigns have clearly been a mainstay of politics for a long time, although their sophistication has clearly grown. The best course of action is to stick to official information from state websites and ignore everything else.
