The Orissa High Court on Tuesday granted conditional bail to the three accused 2023 train accident in Odisha’s Balasore in the region, which killed more than 290 people.
The suspects, Mohammad Amir Khan, Arun Kumar Mahanta, and Pappu Yadav, were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on July 7, 2023, for alleged negligence that led to the train collision.
Significantly, Mahanta was posted as engineer in charge and engineer at Balasore at the time of the incident, while Khan was working as senior engineer at Soro near Balasore.
A single-judge bench, headed by Justice Aditya Kumar Mohapatra, ordered their release on bail of Rs 50,000 each, along with two sureties of the same amount.
The court imposed six other conditions, including ordering the railway authorities not to place them at their headquarters on the same section where the tragedy occurred.
The Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Super Fast Express and a freight train collided on June 2, 2023, near Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, killing at least 296 people and injuring over 1,200.
