When showrunner Neil Gaiman was accused of multiple sexual assault charges, the third season of Good Omens was asked. After the controversial writer backed out of his role in the show, Amazon announced that the show would be ending. However, that finale will not be in the form of a full season, but a single movie-length episode.
The end of Good Omens
Amazon programs the compromise between canceling the show outright and giving it a scheduled final season. Good Omens Season 3 will consist of one 90-minute episode designed to tie up loose ends from the first two seasons. While fans are sure to be disappointed by the lack of a proper final season, they can at least look forward to the finale, something the rest of the show can get.

First released in 2019, Good Omens is a religious fantasy based on Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel of the same name. It’s about the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley who decide to team up and prevent Armageddon and save the Earth, which they choose over their divine homes. It focuses more on their relationship as they embark on their mission to save the world.
A Star-Studded Amazon Hit
Good Omens was Amazon’s favorite in its first two seasons, praised for its great cast and ability to combine religious fantasy with comedy. Despite its controversial religious themes, it was a popular show that won over critics and fans alike, earning an 86 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its star-studded cast includes David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Anna Maxwell Martin, Frances McDormand, Adria Arjona, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, and Brian Cox.
The Neil Gaiman Controversy

Runner and writer Neil Gaiman is the reason Good Omens gets a shortened final season. Earlier this year, he was accused of being molested by two women, one of whom was a fan and the other was his nanny. Since those allegations became public, two other women have come forward and said that the writer abused them.
Although Gaiman denies the allegations against him, he has asked to resign from his position Good Omens to help the show avoid conflicts. That seems to have worked to some extent, with Amazon giving the show one last episode to finish its story. However, Gaiman’s departure puts the show at a disadvantage for production, as Douglas McKinnon also left the show after its second season, meaning it is now completely without a producer.
With greatly reduced operating time and the absence of both its runners, Good Omens Season 3 has its work cut out for it. Rob Wilkins and Josh Cole will serve as executive producers on the final episode, but it’s unclear who will step up as runner-up. It is also unknown who will write the finale, although John Finnemore who co-wrote Season 2 with Gaiman is a likely candidate.
It’s a shame to see a show as popular as it is Good Omens getting a bit of a heartless ending, but it’s better than nothing. Hopefully, the show’s solid source and stellar cast can offset the behind-the-scenes issues and negative association with Gaiman. Deadline is scheduled to shoot in early 2025, so fans will have to wait to find out if the show can stick around without everything.
