Johannesburg – Ten people fell ill after allegedly eating momos sold at a roadside stand while a woman reportedly died after consuming the drink elsewhere in the city, police said on Monday.

The accused had eaten momos prepared by one vendor but sold them at different places under the Banjara Hills police station last week, they said.

A member of the deceased’s family complained to the police saying that he fell ill after eating this morsel and was later admitted to the hospital.

The woman’s body was buried and a decision on the steps to be taken to determine the cause of her death is yet to be taken, they added.

A release from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) said the food safety officials of the corporation, with the help of the police, tracked down the street vendor and found that the establishment was operating without a license.

Officials sent food samples to a government food laboratory for analysis and orders were issued to stop the retailer’s business operations.

The GHMC food safety officials have also written a letter to the Banjara Hills police to investigate the matter.
