Former President Trump announces a new tax credit proposal during his rally at Madison Square Garden.
Former President Donald Trump announced at a campaign rally in New York City on Sunday that, if elected, he would support a tax credit for family caregivers.
“I’m announcing a new policy today, that I will support the tax credit for family caregivers who care for a parent or loved one,” Trump said during an event at Madison Square Garden. “It’s about time they got noticed, isn’t it?”
This is not the first time that elder care has emerged as a priority. During July’s Republican National Convention, policy documents referenced Trump’s promises to strengthen Medicare and focus on home care for the elderly, USA Today reported. Trump campaign spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt told the newspaper that, if elected, Trump “will take care of our seniors by restoring resources to home care, eliminating the uncertainty that leads to a shortage of child care workers, and supporting unpaid family caregivers with tax credits and reduced red tape.”
Both the Trump and Harris campaigns have sought support from the “sandwich generation” of voters who care for their parents while raising their children,

Earlier this month during an appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Vice President Kamala Harris promised to take care of the children at home after detailing how she cared for her mother after she was diagnosed with cancer.
“That means they try to cook what they want to eat, what they can eat,” said Harris. “It means choosing clothes that are soft enough to not irritate their skin. It means trying to think of something funny to make them laugh or smile. And it’s about that person’s dignity. It’s about that person’s independence.”

He went on to talk about how expensive it is for families to send their loved ones to childcare centers or hire someone to take care of them at home.

John Anzalone, founder of Impact Research, spoke with AARP about what family caregivers’ favorite suggestions are, after his organization participated in an AARP survey on the issue.

“This could be an issue in the 2024 election with a voting bloc that makes up one in five Americans,” he said.
