Martha Stewart Was Incommunicado For Touching A Prison Guard

Martha Stewart looks back on life in prison – including solitary confinement.

In 2004, the lifestyle entrepreneur was sentenced to five months in federal prison after being found guilty of conspiracy to obstruct and making false statements to federal investigators in connection with an insider trading case.

Stewart, 83, looks back on his incarceration at the Federal Prison Camp Alderson in West Virginia — which was nicknamed Camp Cupcake during Stewart’s tenure — in the upcoming Netflix documentary, Marthaincluding how he was put in solitary confinement for touching a prison guard.

“Today I saw two very well-dressed ladies walking by and I took a breather next to them, commenting on the warmth of the morning and how well they looked,” Stewart wrote in a letter from jail read in the documentary, per. People. “When I saw from the silver key chain that they were security guards, I lightly brushed the chain. Later I was told to never touch a guard without expecting a severe reprimand.”

“I was pulled over by myself for touching an officer,” Stewart said in the film. “There is no food or water for the whole day. This was Camp Cupcake, remember? That was a nickname. Campcake. It was not a cake.”

A representative of the Federal Bureau of Prisons told Us Weekly in a statement, “FBOP detains offenders in safe and humane facilities. Everyone is provided with the basic necessities of life including three regular meals a day and access to potable water regardless of where they are accommodated. We respectfully decline to address the 2004 allegations.
