It will be interesting to see if the management behind the return of Rainbow Brite may take a page out of He-Man’s book and strengthen their bets on fan appeal. On Netflix, fellow Mattel character He-Man has gotten two shows, one of which is aimed at middle-aged fans of the cartoon’s past (King of the Whole World: Revelation) and one of them was aimed at very young fans (He-Man and the Masters of the World). In this case, Rainbow Brite finding a movie and television show means that one can target an older audience, and one can target a younger audience.
That strategy may backfire, however. In the case of The Revelationmany older fans felt betrayed by He-Man’s appearance at the beginning of the show. He’s back, of course, but that infamous fan attack proves how dangerous it can be to take creative risks when fans want the same.
