Cheryl Hines Shares Secrets With RFK Jr. Marriage, Dealing With ‘Rumors’

“There has to be a connection,” Hines, 59, said to himself Us at the Groundlings 50th Anniversary Event in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 19. “There’s, like, a connection where you look at your husband or your partner and all the craziness that’s going on around you, or you look and check and it’s like, ‘OK. It will be fine. We will get through this moment.’ And, you know, a lot of times it’s funny and you can lean back and say, ‘Crazy balls,’ have a moment together and then pick your head up and move on to the next thing.”

Hines and Kennedy, 70, have been married since 2014 following a previous divorce. Their connection began to unfold Reduce Your Enthusiasm alum in surprise.

“When I met Bobby, I said, ‘You never wanted to enter politics?’ and he said, ‘No, I feel like I could do more work as an environmental lawyer and it’s not necessary. I’m not seen in companies or corporations,” Hines recalled Us. “I was like, ‘Good. This is going to be great!’ And then life gives you left turns, right turns, whatever.”

Kennedy eventually followed in his family’s political footsteps, but Hines never let that define him or their relationship.

“People have a lot of feelings about politics, especially in Hollywood, and I don’t know. I mean, so far I feel like it’s okay,” he said. “I’m fine having such conversations with people and, for me, it doesn’t define a person. For some people it does and it’s like you can’t control it. There’s nothing I can do about it, so I have to let it wash over me.”

Hines’ relationship has been under the microscope this year. Kennedy was accused last month of having an “improper relationship” with a reporter. Both are journalists Olivia Nuzziwho was put on leave by the employer New York Magazineand Kennedy refused physical contact. The presidential candidate, through his spokesman, also said he only met Nuzzi once when he interviewed him in what he described as a “painful episode.”

Hines has not addressed the scandal and was often seen walking away from Kennedy’s side earlier this month. At the event on Saturday, she put on her wedding ring again and explained in detail how the couple dealt with the “rumors”.

“So many feelings with rumours! But everything will be in my book,” said Hines. “I am writing a book. I’ve been taking notes – important notes!”

Hines doesn’t let any drama get in his way, realizing that Us that recently “having a lot of fun with him [her] family.” (Hines and Kennedy share children from their previous marriages.)

“They are exciting. I mean, if I had a boring family, it would be difficult,” she said. “And I think just trying to accept the unknown and instead of fighting it, it’s kind of trying to accept it and say yes to whatever comes your way. To let it flow and find small moments and not take anything too seriously. Although I find myself in a very critical situation!”

Hines, who gushed that she’s “attracted to interesting, intelligent people,” welcomed the fun at the Groundlings’ celebration at Los Angeles’ Jonathan Club. He is a notable alum of the better program.

“I think it was all in the dressing room, like a mess in the dressing room,” Hines said of his favorite memories of the Groundlings. “You hear the music and you know you have to be on stage and you’re trying to put your wig on and you’re trying to remember your lines and everybody’s kind of in this controlled chaos together.”

He added, “It always seemed like a magical process and it was really exciting, seeing people around you achieve these amazing achievements. … Sometimes I’ll go in for an interview. I say, ‘Hello! We’ve been in a big company together for the last two years, but it’s great!’ That’s what you hope for when you start Groundlings.”

Improvising with the famous band also trained Hines in other life lessons.

“The first rule is yes – no matter what anyone says,” she said. “Yeah, you’re in love and it’s like, ‘Oh, are you happy? Yes! I’m having a great time’ and add the information, ‘I love shrimp cocktail!’ And then that helps you go through life. You meet a stranger and you can connect with him if you just start listening and paying attention to what he says.”
