“I’m sorry this happened to you,” Mawla, 26, wrote via Instagram Story on Thursday, October 17, sharing a photo of Payne backstage at the concert. “I will always love and miss you.”
In the next post, Mawla uploaded a photo of the couple holding hands with the caption, “Rest in paradise.”
Us Weekly confirmed that Payne, who briefly dated Mawla in 2022, died on Wednesday, October 16, on the third floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Payne suffered a broken spine and other injuries too severe to be treated by paramedics and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Our role was to head quickly, provide medical assistance, and try to revive him, but his injuries were not life-threatening,” the Buenos Aires emergency official said.
