Fields Thanks Room for Development
Justin Fields, the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker, admitted Thursday that his performance in the six games he has started has been less than stellar. Amid questions about who will start the upcoming game against the New York Jets — him or a recovering Russell Wilson — Fields admitted his game needs improvement. “If I’m being completely honest,” Fields admitted, “I believe there would be no doubt about who should start if I had done better.”
Despite getting a few wins, Fields openly acknowledged the areas he needs to improve and is committed to improving his game.
Platform Performance: A Closer Look
In his six starts, Fields managed a 4-2 record. Despite topping the chart with five rushing touchdowns among the league’s quarterbacks, the Steelers’ offensive performance has been sluggish, ranking 28th in passing and 20th in points per game. Fields’ completion percentage has also dropped to 57% over the past two games, down from his 69% in his first four games.
Russell Wilson: A Game Changer?
On Tuesday, coach Mike Tomlin indicated that Russell Wilson could return as the starter, as he recovers from a lingering calf injury. For the first time this season, Wilson is not on the practice injury report. He appeared to lead the first team and quarterback reps in Wednesday’s individual drills.
Fields reflected on his experience as a starting point, expressing gratitude for the opportunity, despite wishing for a better record. He is not sure about his role in the upcoming game but he assures that his preparation and his approach will remain undisturbed.
Continuous Commitment Despite Uncertainty
Fields confirmed that his contribution to the team will continue, even if it means helping out on the sidelines. He emphasized his commitment to helping his teammates and supporting Wilson when he is on the field.
Fields also credited offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for his guidance, especially in avoiding the financial problems that marred his tenure in Chicago. This season, Fields boasts a record five touchdown passes in one season, along with 16 sacks and one fumble.
Looking Ahead: A Vision of the Fields
Although Sunday may see a reduced role for him, Fields remains optimistic about his potential contribution to the team throughout the season. “You never know what’s going to happen,” Fields noted, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the season and life in general.
