On Tuesday morning, the New York Jets completed the NFL’s worst-kept secret by trading wide receiver Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Jets gave up a conditional third-round pick that could become a second-round pick based on performance, according to reports. The trade comes after Adams told the Raiders he preferred to be removed.
This trade also comes after the Jets lost on Monday Night Football to the Buffalo Bills. The Jets are 2-4 and in third place in the AFC East, behind the Bills and Miami Dolphins.
Adams meeting former Green Bay Packers teammate Aaron Rodgers makes for a great story. A reunion with college quarterback Derek Carr didn’t work out too well in Las Vegas, but there’s no denying that Rodgers and Adams made great music together during their time in Green Bay.
The Jets needed another receiver. But Adams will turn 32 before the NFL Playoffs. It’s well documented that Rodgers is 40 years old and will turn 41 before the playoffs. Yes, and it is well documented that he is coming off an Achilles injury.
But Rodgers looks good coming back from injury. On Monday night, he completed a spectacular Hail Mary at the end of the first half on Allen Lazard.
But that’s kind of the problem with the Jets as they are right now. It’s Rodgers and a bunch of former Packers players. Other former teammates who will follow Rodgers in the Big Apple include Randall Cobb, Billy Turner, Malik Taylor, Tim Boyle, Adrian Amos and assistant coach Nathaniel Hackett.
Hackett was recently stripped of his playing duties in favor of quarterbacks coach Todd Downing, who expressed his desire to run the football Monday night. Breece Hall rushed for 113 yards on 18 carries. Rookie Braelon Allen had three attempts for eight yards.
Ever since the Jets traded for Rodgers, it feels like he’s had an identity crisis. Rodgers denies he had a say in firing coach Robert Saleh, but it appears to be a move to benefit the quarterback.
Finding Adams won’t help that identity problem. Star junior receiver Garrett Wilson, who finally made his debut with eight catches for 107 yards and a touchdown Monday night, is now Rodgers’ second choice.
Not to mention free agent Mike Williams, who everyone thought would be the Jets’ savior when he signed a one-year deal earlier this year, is now reportedly up for a trade. He still has just 10 catches for 145 yards on the season and has yet to find a touchdown.
Adams jumped from one 2-4 ball club to another. The Jets have the best chance to make the playoffs and have an easy schedule the rest of the way.
But is a first-round exit from the AFC Playoffs really what the Jets faithful dreamed of when they made that trade? Adams and Rodgers better play the hits if they want to get past that.
