In south Chennai, floods are again disrupting life

While the northeast monsoon began to hit the city, South Chennai continued to bear the brunt, with many areas inundated on Tuesday. A few OMR areas remained closed across the city even though the rains had subsided by then.

While a few flood-prone districts like Valasaravakkam and Virugambakkam experienced minor inundation, several others in the far south, particularly, Kannagi Nagar in Thoraipakkam and Velachery were inundated. . Relief centers in Thoraipakkam were not functioning due to the flooding, according to Greater Chennai Corporation volunteers.

In AGS Colony, Velachery, the water rose to 2-3 feet, but started to recede after the use of vehicle pumps. Geetha Ganesh, of AGS Colony, suggested that the Velachery Lake should be drained before the monsoons start the waterlogging problem because rainwater has no outlet. In relation to this, the Corporation official said that the Department of Water Resources has been informed of the need to take safety measures and they will take the call in view of the upcoming showers.

In OMR, Sholinganallur, Kandanchavadi, and a few places near Rajiv Gandhi Salai, motorists faced long delays due to waterlogged areas. GCC officials and Council members have flagged the accumulation of plastic waste and trash in storm drains as the main reasons for the closures. A senior official said, “Heavy rain in a short time caused the landslide. The problems are closely monitored and the water level will be revealed in a few hours,” OMR Residents’ Associations also raised the alarm about the lack of flood water drain in several parts as well.

A senior Chennai south official said Narayanapuram Lake had not been flooded before, so there may be some respite for people near the area, as heavy showers are predicted on Wednesday.

Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian visited Maduravoyal and Valasaravakkam areas: waterbodies, canals and relief centres. Meanwhile, milk packets were not distributed in any of these areas, said many residents.
