Long story short, Winrich Kolbe was the director of Star Trek who understood the franchise inside and out, which is part of why he directed so many episodes, including “All Good Things,” the song’s finale. The Next Generation. He even lived the fan’s dream and dated Kate Mulgrew, and we’re sure he didn’t win her over by spouting off about the ship’s spine or the deflector bowl.
Instead, he made the kind of personal connection that we want our favorite characters to make on screen. And while Trek never quite got rid of its technobabble fever, Kolbe’s influence helped remind producers of what really mattered: of a person the trip. And that adventure can’t really begin until the franchise’s obsession with meaningless technical jargon finally ends.
