A 28-year-old PhD student at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) committed suicide on Thursday in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, marking the fourth such case at the college in the past year.
This student, who is studying Earth Sciences, was found dead in his hostel D-116 in Hall Number 4 at night. The incident happened on Thursday afternoon when his classmates reported to the law enforcement.

In a statement, IIT Kanpur expressed its grief, saying, “A police investigation team has visited the institute to investigate the circumstances of the death. The institute is awaiting the results of the police investigation to determine the cause. According to the police chief, the police found his room locked when they arrived. They had to break down the door to get his body out. A detective team was called to collect evidence at the scene.
A note was found, in which the student stated that he took responsibility for his own death. In addition, authorities found his cell phone in the room, which may provide information about the reasons behind his suicide.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyanpur) Abhishek Pandey said, “After forcing open the door, they found the body of a woman hanging from the ceiling fan.”
The 28-year-old had obtained his BSc from Hansraj College in Delhi University and his MSc from Bundelkhand University in Jhansi.
Suicide cases in IIT Kanpur
On January 18, a 29-year-old PhD student named Priyanka Jaiswal, who was pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, committed suicide in her locked hostel room. Last week, on January 11, a 31-year-old second-year MTech student, Vikas Kumar Meena, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room, allegedly under suspension from school.
Additionally, on December 19 last year, a 34-year-old researcher, Pallavi Chilka, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her second-floor hostel room on campus.
