At least 19 people were injured after a high-speed train collided with a stationary freight train on Friday evening at Kavaraipettai railway station in Tamil Nadu, near Chennai. Due to the impact of the collision, a fire broke out in two teams, and at least 13 coaches were lost.
The stranded passengers of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express were shifted to another special train on Saturday morning to continue their journey. The injured people were hospitalized.

This incident happened around 8.30 pm on Friday. According to railway officials, the train staff experienced a major jolt while entering the Kavaraipettai station. Instead of moving onto the main line as shown, the train went into a loop and collided with a stationary freight train.
“It shouldn’t have stopped here, so it should have gone through the station. After leaving Chennai, green signals were given to this train. The driver was following the signals correctly, but the train should have taken the main line. It took the loop line in the machine, which is where the error happened,” said RN Singh, Manager General of Southern Railway.

A parcel train was burnt in the accident and 13 coaches have been derailed. Train movement at that facility has been closed, and renovation work is underway. The Railways canceled two trains and diverted more than half a dozen others to other routes.

Chief Minister MK Stalin said he was monitoring the rescue and relief work. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin met the injured passengers at the Government Stanley Medical College in Chennai. Minister Avadi Nasar and senior officials were leading rescue efforts in the area.

The Railways says that more than 95 percent of passengers have been safely evacuated from the affected coaches, and so far, no injuries or serious injuries have been reported.

A special train carrying stranded passengers of Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express left Chennai Central railway station early on Saturday morning to continue its journey. The train left the station at around 04.45 in the morning. The stranded passengers were given food and water while they waited, said the Railways.
