Culture Minister Saji Cherian on Thursday emphasized the importance of ethical reporting and the responsibility of the media to correct their mistakes.
He was speaking at a memorial meeting organized by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club to mark the 114th anniversary of the expulsion of journalist Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai from Travancore for his journalistic work.
Journalists and people from various walks of life paid floral tributes at the Swadeshabhimani statue in Palayam.
Mr. Cherian criticized other news channels for spreading misinformation without adhering to ethical standards. It was important for the media to be accountable and correct any wrongdoing, he said.
He also said that the principles of journalism advocated by Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai are more relevant than ever in today’s media environment.
